How to Search Your Claude Chat History (5 Ways That Work in 2026)

Open the full list of your chats at claude.ai/recents and click the search icon at the top. Type a word or phrase and Claude lists every conversation where it appears, in a title or in the messages, with a short snippet showing the match.

It works best for distinctive words: an error message, a product name, a client, a function name. Common words return a long list of matches, so pick the most unusual word you remember.

Good for: exact words and names. Not so good for: vague topics, or telling apart what you wrote from what Claude wrote.

On paid plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise), Claude can search your past chats itself. Ask it the way you would ask a colleague:

• "What did we decide about the database migration?"
• "Find our conversation about the pricing page."
• "Let's continue where we left off with the onboarding emails."

You'll see the search appear as a tool call in the chat. It is switched on by default; the toggle is Search and reference chats under Settings → Memory.

Two things to know. A search started outside a Project only covers chats outside Projects, and a search inside a Project stays inside that Project, so ask from the right place. And it is not available on the free plan.

Good for: "what did we conclude" questions, where you remember the idea but not the words.

Once you're in the right chat, your browser's own find (Ctrl+F, or Cmd+F on Mac) is the fastest way to the exact passage. It sounds obvious, but it's the missing second step for most people: method 1 or 2 gets you to the conversation, and Ctrl+F gets you to the line.

If you want a copy you control, or you're about to close or change accounts, export your data: Settings → Privacy → Export data, on the web or desktop app (not mobile). Claude emails you a download link that expires 24 hours after it arrives. Free, Pro and Max users can export; on Team and Enterprise only the Primary Owner can.
