How to Organize ChatGPT Chats into Folders (2026)

ChatGPT's sidebar is one long list, newest first. After a few months of daily use it holds hundreds of conversations, and the one you need is always somewhere in the middle. ChatGPT still doesn't have folders, but it has a few features that do part of the job, and knowing which one fits which problem saves a lot of scrolling. Here are four ways to organize your ChatGPT chats, from built-in to fully nested folders.

Disclosure: ChatPeer is our own product and is method 4. Methods 1 to 3 need nothing but ChatGPT.

1. Projects (best for ongoing work with its own context)

Projects are the closest thing ChatGPT has to folders. Open Projects in the sidebar, create one, and you can add files, set project instructions and move existing chats into it. Each project keeps its chats, files and instructions in one place, and you can turn on project-only memory so context from one project doesn't bleed into another.

Projects shine for work that runs for weeks: a client, a course, a book, a codebase. OpenAI's own advice is that a quick, self-contained question doesn't need one.

Good for: a handful of big, ongoing workstreams. Not so good for: sorting hundreds of small chats, nesting, or tagging one chat under two topics.

2. Archive what you're done with

Archiving takes a chat out of the sidebar without deleting it. Your list gets shorter, and the conversation is still there when you need it: archived chats stay searchable from the sidebar search (Ctrl+K, or Cmd+K on Mac).

A simple routine that works: once a week, archive anything you won't reopen. The sidebar then shows only what's live.

Good for: keeping the list short. Not good for: grouping, since everything archived lands in one pile.

3. Rename chats so search can find them

ChatGPT names chats automatically, and the names are often vague. Renaming the ones that matter, with a consistent prefix like `[Client A]` or `[SQL]`, turns sidebar search into a rough folder system: search the prefix and you get the group.

It costs a few seconds per chat and needs discipline, but it works with no extra tools. For more on finding old chats, see How to Search Your ChatGPT Chat History.

4. Real folders with ChatPeer

ChatPeer is a Chrome extension that adds a folder panel above ChatGPT's own chat list:

  • Nested, colour-coded folders, to any depth, with drag-and-drop ordering
  • File as you go: click '+' on a folder while you're reading a chat, or use 'Add chats…' to tick off a backlog in one pass
  • [Smart tags](/features/smart-tags) that sort chats into topics like Coding, Writing or Research automatically
  • Works alongside Projects: a chat can be in a Project and a ChatPeer folder at the same time, and nothing changes in your OpenAI account

The folder tree is stored in your browser, not on a server. The same extension adds folders to Claude and Grok, each with its own tree. The free plan includes 2 folders; any paid plan makes them unlimited.

Which should you use?

  • A few big ongoing projects: ChatGPT Projects.
  • A sidebar that's simply too long: archive weekly.
  • No extensions allowed at work: rename with prefixes and search.
  • Hundreds of chats across many topics, or you also use Claude and Grok: nested folders with ChatPeer.

Most heavy users end up combining them: Projects for the big workstreams, folders for everything else.

Questions people ask

Does ChatGPT have folders?

Not as such. Projects are the closest built-in feature: they group chats with shared files and instructions, but they don't nest. Extensions like ChatPeer add nested folders on top of the sidebar.

Can I move existing chats into a ChatGPT Project?

Yes. Once a project exists, you can move existing chats into it as well as starting new ones there.

Does archiving a ChatGPT chat delete it?

No. Archived chats leave the sidebar but stay in your account, and sidebar search still finds them.

Do folder extensions change my ChatGPT account?

ChatPeer doesn't. Its folders are stored in your browser and sit on top of ChatGPT's list; your chats and Projects stay exactly as they are.
