How to Delete Claude Chats (One, Several or All of Them)

Claude's chat list grows fast, and sooner or later you want some of it gone: test chats, half-finished drafts, anything with details you'd rather not keep. Claude lets you delete one conversation or several at once from the web app. Here is how, plus one step worth doing before you delete anything.

Disclosure: ChatPeer is our own product and is mentioned in step 4. Steps 1 to 3 need nothing but Claude.

1. Export first (if there's any chance you'll need it)

Deleting a conversation can't be undone. If any of it might matter later, back it up first: Settings → Privacy → Export data emails you a copy of your whole account as JSON. For a single chat as Markdown or PDF, see How to Export Claude Conversations.

2. Delete a single conversation

  1. Open the conversation.
  2. Click its name at the top of the chat.
  3. Choose Delete and confirm.

The same menu has Rename, which is often the better choice if the problem is a chat you can't find rather than one you don't want.

3. Delete several conversations at once

  1. Open Chats from the sidebar to see your full history.
  2. Hover over a conversation and tick the checkbox that appears. Repeat for every chat you want to remove.
  3. Click Delete Selected and confirm.

Claude's help center doesn't describe a single "delete everything" button, so clearing your whole history means selecting the chats in this list. These steps are for Claude's consumer plans (Free, Pro and Max); Team and Enterprise workspaces follow their organization's settings.

4. Faster cleanup with ChatPeer

If you clean up regularly, ticking boxes one by one gets slow. ChatPeer adds a Select button to its panel on claude.ai: click chats to add them, or Select all to pick everything in view, then Delete. It asks you to confirm with the exact count, deletes them from your Claude account, and removes them from any ChatPeer folders.

The same selection can be exported as a ZIP first on paid plans. Multi-select and bulk delete themselves are free, and work the same way on ChatGPT.

Before you delete: chats in Projects and shared links

Chats inside a Project are still your conversations and can be deleted the same way. Deleting a chat doesn't delete the files you uploaded to the Project's knowledge; remove those from the Project itself.

If you ever shared a conversation, check that the share link is gone too, since anyone with the link could see it. And if what you really want is a tidier list rather than fewer chats, folders or Projects may be a better fit than deleting; see How to Organize Claude Chats.

Questions people ask

Can I delete multiple Claude chats at once?

Yes. Open Chats from the sidebar, tick the checkbox on each conversation you want to remove, and click Delete Selected.

Is there a 'delete all' button in Claude?

Claude's help center doesn't document one. To clear everything, select the conversations in your Chats list and delete them together, or use an extension like ChatPeer that has a Select all option.

Can I recover a deleted Claude conversation?

No. Deleting is permanent from your side, so export anything you might need first (Settings → Privacy → Export data).

Does deleting a chat in a Project delete the Project's files?

No. Files in a Project's knowledge stay until you remove them from the Project.
