How to Delete Grok Chat History (grok.com and the X App)

Grok keeps two separate histories: conversations on **grok.com** (and the Grok app) belong to your xAI account, and conversations you had with Grok **inside X** belong to your X account. Deleting one doesn't touch the other. Here's how to clear each, and what to check before you do.

Keep a copy first

Deleting can't be undone from your side, so back up anything you might need. For your whole grok.com history, use Settings → Data Controls to request your account data (a ZIP of JSON files). Delete one conversation on grok.com

In the chat history sidebar, hover over the conversation and use its delete option (a trash icon or the ⋯ menu, depending on the version you see), then confirm.

Delete all conversations on grok.com

Go to Settings → Data Controls and choose Delete all conversations, then confirm. The change applies to your xAI account, so the Grok app on other devices shows the same empty history.

If you'd rather not save a conversation in the first place, Grok's private chat mode keeps it out of your history.

Delete Grok history inside X

Chats with Grok in the X app or on x.com are separate. To delete one, open Grok in X, open History, use the conversation's menu and choose Delete. To delete all of them, go to Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Grok & Third-party collaborators → Delete conversation history, and confirm.

What happens after you delete

Deleted chats disappear from your history straight away. Behind the scenes, X says deleted Grok history may be kept internally for up to 30 days, and longer where needed for security or legal reasons. Check xAI's and X's current privacy policies for the exact terms on your account.

One thing deletion doesn't cover: shared links. If you shared a conversation, copies may exist outside your account. Remove the share, and don't share anything you'd want to delete later.

How do I delete all my Grok conversations?

Does deleting on grok.com delete my Grok chats in X?
