How to Find, Search and Export Your Grok Chat History

Grok is easy to start a conversation with, which is exactly why its history fills up fast: a coding question, a trip plan, a news check and a long research thread, all in one newest-first list. Grok gives you some tools to manage that, and it's worth knowing their limits before you need something urgently. Here's how to find an old Grok conversation, and how to get your chats out of Grok.

Disclosure: ChatPeer is our own product and appears as the last option in each section. Everything else uses only Grok.

Where your Grok chats live

Conversations on grok.com belong to your xAI account and show up in the grok.com sidebar. Chats you had with Grok inside the X app are a separate history that lives with your X account. If you can't find a conversation, first check which of the two you used.

Finding an old conversation

Grok's own search. Grok's search can find words inside your chats, which is enough when you remember a distinctive word. It only covers Grok, and it can't separate what you wrote from what Grok wrote.

Projects. If you work on something over many sessions, Grok's Projects keep files and instructions together for that task. They help going forward, but they don't sort the conversations you've already had.

ChatPeer search. ChatPeer builds a full-text index of your Grok history in your browser. Press Ctrl+Shift+F on grok.com to search every message, filter by who said it, or match an exact phrase. With All Access the same box also searches ChatGPT and Claude, which helps when you can't remember which AI gave you the answer.

Exporting everything: Grok's account data download

Grok can give you your whole history as a backup. Go to Settings → Data Controls on grok.com (it opens your xAI account page, accounts.x.ai) and request your data download. You get a ZIP of JSON files with your conversations and account data. It's a snapshot: anything you say to Grok after requesting it won't be in that file.

JSON is fine as a backup but hard to read. Chats from the X app aren't in this export; those come with your X account's data archive.

Exporting one conversation

Copy. Every Grok reply has a copy button. Good for one answer, tedious for a whole conversation.

Print to PDF. Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) and Save as PDF works on any page, with the usual problems: sidebar included, awkward page breaks.

ChatPeer export. ChatPeer adds an Export button to Grok conversations. Choose Markdown (with code fences preserved, ready for Obsidian or Notion), PDF (a clean document with speaker labels and timestamps), JSON or plain text. Paid plans can export several chats at once as a ZIP. Plain text is free; the other formats need a paid plan. Files are built in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Keeping Grok organized from here

If your Grok history is already long, folders are the fix that sticks: file each conversation as you finish it, and you won't need to search for it later. ChatPeer keeps a separate folder tree for Grok, ChatGPT and Claude, so a Grok folder never clutters your other sidebars.

Questions people ask

Can I export my Grok conversations?

Yes. Grok's Settings → Data Controls leads to your xAI account page, where you can download your account data as a ZIP of JSON files. To save a single chat as Markdown or PDF, use an extension such as ChatPeer.

Why can't I find a Grok chat I had in the X app?

Chats inside the X app are tied to your X account, separate from grok.com history. Look in the X app, or in your X data archive.

Can Grok search inside my old messages?

Grok's own search can find words inside your chats. For filters such as only your messages or exact phrases, and for searching Grok together with ChatGPT and Claude, use a local index like ChatPeer.

Is my Grok history uploaded by ChatPeer?

No. ChatPeer's index, folders and exports are all built and stored in your browser.
