How to Export Your ChatGPT Conversation History

You've had dozens — maybe hundreds — of useful conversations with ChatGPT. Explanations, code, outlines, research summaries. At some point you want to get that content out: into your notes, into a document, or just backed up somewhere. OpenAI has an export feature, but it gives you everything at once in a JSON format designed for data portability rather than readability. There are a few other approaches worth knowing about.

Option 1: OpenAI's built-in export

Go to Settings → Data Controls → Export data. OpenAI will email you a download link within a few hours. The ZIP contains a conversations.json with your entire history in a structured but verbose format, plus any uploaded files.

**Pros:** Official, complete, includes metadata.

**Cons:** All-or-nothing — you can't export a single conversation. The JSON format requires processing to be readable. You get one export of everything, not a clean file per conversation.

If you need your JSON export converted to Markdown or plain text, try our [Chat Export Converter](/tools/export-converter) — it runs in your browser with no upload.

Option 2: Browser print-to-PDF

Open a conversation, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac), and print to PDF. Simple.

**Pros:** Available to anyone, right now, no setup.

**Cons:** The PDF includes ChatGPT's full UI — sidebar, navigation, ads. It's not a clean document. Long conversations paginate awkwardly. There's no way to do this for multiple conversations without opening each one manually.

Option 3: ChatPeer export

ChatPeer is a Chrome extension that adds an export button directly to the ChatGPT conversation header. Open any conversation, click Export, choose your format (TXT, Markdown, PDF, or JSON), and the file downloads immediately.

**Pros:** Per-conversation export in clean formats. PDF includes proper role labelling and timestamps. Markdown preserves code blocks with language tags. Bulk export (multiple conversations as a ZIP) is available on premium.

**Cons:** Requires installing an extension. PDF and Markdown exports are premium features.

The extension also adds folders and full-text search to ChatGPT — [see the ChatGPT features page](/chatgpt) for the full list.

Which approach should you use?

If you need your full history in a machine-readable format for archiving or processing: use OpenAI's export. If you want a quick, rough PDF of a single conversation: browser print. If you regularly need clean exports of individual conversations, or if you want Markdown that imports properly into Obsidian or Notion: ChatPeer is worth installing.

All three approaches are worth having in your toolkit — they're not mutually exclusive.
